Our Commitment

We align our efforts with Indigenous perspectives, refraining from language that suggests land ownership and recognizing the intrinsic connection between people and the environment. By emphasizing intersectionality in all we do, we work to build a more inclusive and just movement that considers the diverse experiences of those most affected by environmental inequities.

Environmental Justice: Advocating for Equity and Sustainability

At the United People Project, we believe that everyone has the right to live, work, and thrive in a healthy environment. Environmental justice is the intersection of social justice and environmental advocacy, addressing the disproportionate impacts of environmental issues on marginalized communities. Our mission is to bridge the gap between environmental challenges and social inequities, empowering communities to advocate for their futures.

Why Environmental Justice Matters

For decades, low-income communities, communities of color, and Indigenous populations have borne the brunt of environmental hazards. From polluted air and water to the devastating effects of climate change, these challenges exacerbate existing social inequities. At the United People Project, we recognize that environmental health is inseparable from financial stability, mental well-being, and physical health.

We focus on tackling these intertwined issues by fostering awareness, promoting solutions, and equipping individuals and communities to drive meaningful change.

 Our Approach to Environmental Justice

We approach environmental justice with a holistic perspective, advocating for policies and initiatives that consider the social, cultural, and economic dynamics of affected communities. Our work centers on:

  • Amplifying the voices of those most impacted by environmental issues, ensuring their perspectives guide our programs.

  • Through initiatives like the Youth Environmental Leadership Initiative (YELI), we prepare the next generation of changemakers to address environmental and social challenges.

  • Programs like Roots & Realities and the Marion Roots Community Heritage Program connect individuals to their cultural and environmental heritage, fostering a deeper sense of stewardship and resilience.

  • Programs like Roots & Realities connect individuals to South Carolina’s rich environmental and cultural history, fostering a deeper understanding of how heritage shapes resilience and stewardship in our communities.
